Hello, I was hoping to get some insight into reviewing a project that includes a distillery and storing spirits in 55 gallon barrels/casks. The ABV of the distillate once in the barrel will be above 20% and below 80% but typically no less than 50%. The building will also include an A-2 that is over 5000 sq ft.
According to the definitions in IBC 307.5 it would fall into a H-3 because the quantity of flammable or combustible liquid will be well above 120 gallons. Chapter 57 , 5701.2 # 10 is an exception for using requirements due to being stored in closed-wooden barrels.
The architect contends this is not an H due to not having a limit to the quantities being stored in the building. He classifies the building as an F-1/S-1, A-2 and a total building area of 9000 sq ft and non-separated.
They did a chapter 34 evaluation to determine if sprinklers were required, and they were not required. If it were classified as an H chapter 34 is not allowed.
Does anyone have insight into working with buildings such as this? Any help would be appreciated.
